Why Are Evaluations Necessary?
One of Little League’s requirements is to hold player evaluations annually for all divisions except T-Ball. These evaluations ensure that teams are formed as evenly as possible and that players are placed in the appropriate divisions. Please note, evaluations are not tryouts—all registered players will be assigned to a team. It’s very important for players to attend these evaluations to facilitate proper team placement.
Evaluation Schedule
Dates and Times:
Intermediate and Juniors Divisions Monday, March 9th 5:30pm - 7:30pm (light permitting)
Minors Kid Pitch & Majors Divisions Sunday, March 15th
1:30pm - 3:30pm
Machine Pitch Division Saturday, March 21st
9:00am - 11:00am
T-Ball & Coach Pitch Divisions Practices will begin on Saturday April 4th at 8:30am
Note: Pitchers may need to stay a bit longer for additional evaluations.
Location: Schrom Hills Park, 6915 Hanover Pkwy, Greenbelt, MD 20770
Details: Registration will take place at the picnic pavilion. Each child will receive a number and proceed to the field for evaluation by coaches.
While players are being evaluated, there will be a parent meeting in the pavilion. During this meeting, we’ll discuss key information about the upcoming season, including:
- Volunteer opportunities and the parent involvement requirement for this year.
- How you can help support the league throughout the season.
At least one family member should attend this meeting. We will keep it brief to ensure parents can also watch the evaluations.
After evaluations, coaches will work together to organize teams. Once teams are finalized, coaches will reach out to families with practice and game schedules.
Coaching Needs
A big thank you to the parents who have already volunteered to coach this spring—your support is greatly appreciated! However, we are still looking for additional Head Coaches for our Intermediate division. If you’re interested in coaching, please contact Jake Lappi at [email protected] to learn more.
Special Notes:
- If you have specific team requests (e.g., for siblings or carpooling), please email [email protected]. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but our primary goal is to create balanced teams based on player skills—not location preferences.
- Requests MUST be in no later than the Thursday before Your Players Division Evaluation.
What Equipment Does My Child Need?
Mandatory:
- Players must bring their own fielding glove and batting helmet to all practices and games.
- GYBLL encourages use of batting helmets with the "c-flap" / jaw protector design, but it is not required.
Recommended:
- Cleats are highly encouraged for all kid pitch players. Molded plastic or rubber cleats are allowed in all Divisions; metal cleats (spikes) are allowed only in Intermediate and Juniors Divisions.
- Baseball pants should also be worn for practice and games. If you don’t have pants yet, we recommend checking with your coach about the preferred color for this season.
Optional:
- The league will provide each player with a jersey and hat, along with safety and game equipment such as balls and fully compliant catcher’s gear.
- Players are encouraged to bring their own bat, and the league will provide a few bats for each team. Bats for T-Ball, Machine Pitch, and Minors divisions must have the USA Baseball certification logo. Intermediate players can use both USA Baseball and BBCOR bats, but parents should consult with coaches before purchasing these larger and heavier bats.
- Batting gloves are encouraged, while sliding mitts ("oven mitts") are permitted but may be restricted if they become a distraction from gameplay.
- Other protective equipment such as elbow guards, hand guards, and ankle guards are also permitted, but not required.
