Greenbelt All-Stars Teams
Each summer, Little Leagues around the world select All-Stars teams made up of players from their league. These All-Stars teams compete in tournaments--first against local Little Leagues and, if they advance, against Little Leagues across the country.
Greenbelt Youth Baseball Little League (GYBLL) typically fields five All-Stars teams each year:
- Minors - 10U Baseball (players league age 10 and younger)
- Minors - 11U Baseball (players league age 11 and younger)
- Majors - 12U Baseball (players league age 12 and younger)
- Intermediate 50/70 - 13U Baseball (players league age 13 and younger)
- Juniors - 14U Baseball (players league age 14 and younger)
The All-Star experience is Little League's most competitive program and requires a greater financial, time, and emotional investment than a regular Spring or Fall season.
What is the general timeline?
All-Stars teams are selected on or after May 15. Depending on the team (10U, 11U, 12U, 13U, or 14U), there are two to three tournaments during the summer.
District 4 State Tournament
- Each All-Stars team participates in the District 4 Little League Tournament, which is hosted by one of the Little League organizations in our District. These include Greenbelt, Laurel, Annapolis Area, Arbutus, and South Baltimore.
- Tournaments are double-elimination, and can last up to a week depending on how many teams qualify and how play proceeds.
- These generally take place in early mid- to late June. When tournament dates are announced, GYBLL will share this information with families via email.
Maryland State Tournament
- Little League All-Stars teams that win their District Tournaments participate in the Maryland State Tournament, which can be hosted by any willing league in the state.
- These tournaments last about a week and typically take place between mid-June and mid-July, with on age division tournament held each subsequent week.
Regional Tournaments
- Little League All-Stars teams that win the Maryland LL State Championships advance to the Mid-Atlantic Region tournaments. This tournament is held in Bristol, Connecticut in early August. For the 10U and 11U All-Stars teams, this is the final tournament.
- Intermediate (50/70) All-Stars teams that win the Maryland Intermediate (50/70) State Championship advance to the East Region tournament, held in Dover, Delaware in mid- to late July.
- Junior League All-Stars teams that win the Maryland JL State Championship advance to the East Region tournament. This tournament is held in Dubois, Pennsylvania in late July.
League World Series Tournaments
- 12U teams that advance in their regional tournaments go on to play in the Little League World Series in mid- to late-August in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
- 13U teams that advance in their regional tournament go on to play in the Intermediate (50/70) Baseball World Series in early August in Taylor, Michigan.
- 14U teams that advance in their regional tournament go on to play in the Junior League Baseball World Series in early August in Taylor, Michigan.
What is the player time commitment?
Once selected, All-Stars teams practice multiple times per week leading up to the District 4 Tournament and, if applicable, leading up to the State and Mid-Atlantic Region Tournaments. Practices are held in and around Greenbelt, Maryland.
Who Can Play on an All-Stars Team?
To be eligible, a player must meet the following criteria:
- Player must be rostered on a Greenbelt Youth Baseball Little League team in the Spring season. A player must have played in at least 8 games played by their team during the Spring season.
- The player and parents should plan to be available to attend most, if not all, practices and games during the All Star period.
- The player and parents must provide a birth certificate, a and other residency or eligibility documentation as required by Little League International and Maryland State Little League. Failure to provide documentation in a timely manner is grounds for dismissal from the team.
How Are Players selected for the All-Stars teams?
Players are selected for the All-Stars teams based on several factors, including skill, position competence, attitude, and availability. All-Stars managers make the final rostering decision with approval from the GYBLL Board.
How Are the Managers of All-Stars teams selected?
The managers (head coaches) and assistant coaches for each All-Stars team are selected and approved by the GYBLL Board. Eligible coaches will be invited to apply in late March through mid-April. Prospective managers will be interviewed by a Board sub-committee. The Board will appoint managers and their assistant coaches in early to mid-May prior to player selection.
